PLATFORM 1234

2020

With the construction of the Metro tunnel breaking ground, it has since occupied several critical public spaces in the city of Melbourne. Its excavation and temporary structures are causing both a physical disruption to public gatherings as well as a visual scare in our cityscape. Although its excavation of the land will eventually be filled, and its temporary structures will be dismantled, the years of its construction occupation require a remediation strategy between the city's inhabitants and the built environment. This project aims to design a more inclusive approach to construction infrastructures. It replaces the solid acoustic shed with translucent tiles, exposing the inner workings of its structure and the construction progress while offering more gradual remediation between land and the inhabitants. The platforms above the acoustic shed provide spaces for temporary programs like hospitality venues and urban vegetation (done by various plant boxes), which reclaim the city's inhabitants' public space and provide an alternative temporary experience. In addition, I have also proposed three uniquely designed scaffolding bridges, connecting the platforms and nearby underutilised semi-private spaces to activate the city streets further. The use of easily sourced modular material is crucial for its mobility and adaptability. This design can serve as a template solution for various future construction excavations in a densely populated urban setting.

This project proposes a series of temporary installations above and around metro tunnel construction sites. Constructed from affordable modular components, it provides much-needed space for assembly and social encounters by bridging underutilised public and private spaces. Remediation of the land is different for each project depending on the project’s size, function, accessibility, etc. However, using easily removable materials such as scaffolding, cable, and modular design and construction, can provide a template for future applications on construction sites across Melbourne.
