The objective of this project is to redesign the existing ABC Studio while preserving its heritage as an Australian cultural icon. The project started with intense investigation about the site and its surroundings. Through this process I discovered a strong potential for art design industry and a high affordable housing demand especially for younger generations. Therefore, my proposal includes 31 housing units, exhibition gallery, offices, archive/library and cinema; as well as the original studio spaces. As per Glen Eira council planned, the forecourt is converted into a public park with additional landscape features and an outdoor performance area.

I also explored combining different design styles in order to avoid being a pastiche of the original. Over all, the design is intended to be fun and playful with minimal restrains. The blob structure and bright colour scheme introduce a new creative atmosphere and contests traditional media dominance represent by the original building. Though the the new structures are bold and distinct, it also places emphasis on the original functional modernist design.

I also believe architecture is a multi disciplinary practice and other forms of creativity can often feed into the design process. For this project I further investigated the use oil painting as a bridge between imagination to reality. The realistic painting about the site allows me to gain a better understanding of the heritage value behind the studio. Since television industry in the age of instant information is experiencing a similar situation compare to oil painting during the birth of photograph. Based on that, I developed a more abstract painting to investigate form, colour and contrasting styles on a conceptual level.
