The Archive

2019

As the name suggests, in this studio I have proposed an architectural archive with additional public interactive space in the heart of Melbourne city. The project started with using film as formal analysis and the theatrical elements has been the main source of inspiration for the proposal. The archive located on the intersection of Collins St and Manchester Ln In Melbourne CBD. The building composed of an archive, Library and Exhibition spaces as well as an outdoor platform with retractable shelter cover. The final proposal also focused on using various structural elements to impose a dramatic atmosphere.

The main design philosophy is to have an interactive space for public at the same time a safe space for record keeping. The functionalist design for the three floors at the top and the truss system symbolises the structural aspect of architecture. The blobitecture element of the archive represents the futuristic approach. Last, the central cone which loosely resemble a cathedral’s spear symbolise the history and past.

The archive is completely enclosed with a cobble stone shaped shell to represent resilience and protection. While hovering over the lane way creates a suspenseful atmosphere. Made from ETFE fibre, during the day the structure seems solid, but it transforms into a semi-transparent bubble which allows people to see part of the truss structure inside the archive.

Above the archive there are three levels, include office space, exhibition, library and the outdoor platforms. In the library there is sky light tube run through all three floors to provide adequate natural lighting. The space at the top is divided into two areas: an auditorium on Collins ST side and a temporary exhibition space facing the Laneway. Though the top floor is designed to be an outdoor area, there are drapes on each side and can be lowered along the truss structure to provide shelter.

The main load bearing structure are the trusses which run through the whole building. Designed through a set of hanging model prototypes, the truss system carries all the gravitational load. It is also reinforced by floor plates, which act as braces to resist lateral load. The whole building is threaded through by a central cone. In contrast to other skyscraper, the core in this case is not a load bearing structure but designed for the vertical circulation of the building. The second circulation system is through a series of escalators and stairs. This way of transition provides a more interesting spatial experience for visitors.

Film can be vary similar in relation to building’s atmosphere and ambience. A space can be suspenseful like a cliff hanger, or creates tension with visitors. A space can be foreshadowing the next or build a prefect illusion through lighting and angles. Like film, building can be just as dramatic. For this instance, film for me is both an inspiration, an investigative tool and use as representation.

During this project, I have also explored other means of representation as well as alternative proposals. Further more, the early research also produced a model based on a shorted video.
